The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is the place where everyone can discover and experience modern and contemporary visual art and design. The collection, exhibitions, publications, research and educational programmes offer unique and compelling insights into today’s world, reflecting on broader social issues, as well as those that influence our individual lives.
In creating interactions between audiences and art, the museum draws inspiration from dialogues with artists. It explores the complex issues of past, present and future – as defined by artists and signalled by ourselves – to deliver a programme that inspires. These activities are led by its active approach to sharing, caring for and renewing the renowned collection.

French photographer Mohamed Bourouissa is fascinated by the rituals and social behaviour of certain communities. Intrigued by the role that horses, stables and riding play in the lives of the black community in Philadelphia (USA), he collaborated with artists and riders to launch a competition for the most elegantly decorated horse. Bourouissa transformed this event into a series of impressive photos, a film and a sequence of sculptures. With this series he investigates the notion of the classic, sometimes stereotypical, cowboy.
