Yuki Tawada (JP, 1978) is interested in the healing mechanism of the human mind. She employs unique techniques such as shaving off or burning the surfaces of her own photographs, methods she has developed during her research in art therapy and folk religion. The resulting works transcend the boundaries of photography, painting, or sculpture. By accentuating its physicality, they restore the power and aura of photography, which was lost once it became an object of mass consumption.
Tawada received her PhD in Fine arts from Tokyo University of the Arts and BA in Agriculture from Tohoku University. Her recent exhibitions include NEW PLANET PHOTO CITY - William Klein and Photographers Living in the 22nd Century (21_21 Design Sight, Tokyo, 2018), Light/Electricity/God: Thunderbolts and Art (Gunma Museum of Art, JP, 2017), and 5×3 (Kunstraum Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, 2015).
