Toshio Shibata

Toshio Shibata (b.1949, Tokyo, Japan) is widely acclaimed for his large-format photographs of large-scale works of civil engineering such as bridges and dams in unpopulated landscapes. Shibata graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a B.A. in 1972 and an M.F.A. in 1974 in which he concentrated primarily on painting. Shibata received a fellowship from the Belgian Ministry of Education to study at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Gent, Belgium from 1975 to 1977 where he began his study of photography. In 1992 Shibata received the 17th Kimora Ihei Commemorative Photography Prize; in 2009 he was the recipient of the Photographic Society of Japan Award, Lifetime Achievement.
