Tom Butler (1979, London) lives and works in Portland, USA. He studied at Chelsea College of Art and The Slade, London.
Butler is most recognised for his ongoing series of handpainted Victorian Cabinet cards, albumen prints mounted on cardboard, featuring portraits of men and women rendered anonymous by colourful patterns and forms applied in meticulously detailed gouache. These painted interventions express the artist’s seemingly contradictory desires to both hide and to perform.
Butler has exhibited widely in the UK and the USA and his work is on display in a number of public collections including The SØR Rusche Collection, Germany and The University of Maine, Museum of Art, USA.
