Sema Bekirovic (1977, NL) mostly works with the tension between obtaining and letting go of control. Her work, including sculpture, video, photography and drawing, almost feels like an experiment with chance and coincidence. It is these aspects that decide how the work will develop. Bekirovic’s recent solo exhibition at Museum Jan Cunen also refers to some basic principles of nature and it’s significant impact on mandkind; showing our humble position within the universe.
Sema Bekirovic studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in 2005-6. Recent solos shows include: Museum Jan Cuenen, Oss, (2013), Diana Stigter, Amsterdam, (2011) and The Hayward Gallery, London (2010). Bekirovic participated in numerous group shows, among others: Nomas Foundation, Rome, (2013), FOAM Amsterdam and Museum de Hallen, Haarlem, both in 2012. Her work has also been seen at Museum fur Gestaltung, Zurich, Witte de With, Rotterdam and Het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Last year Bekirovic’s film ‘Between my head and the sky’ was included in MTV 2 Art Breaks, a project by Creative Time and PS1, New York.
