Rob Hornstra

The Netherlands, Amsterdam Flatland Gallery

Rob Hornstra (1975, Borne, The Netherlands) graduated with honors from the Academy of Arts in Utrecht in 2004, after having already obtained a degree in Social and Legal Services from the Institute of Higher Professional Education. For 'The Sochi Project', Hornstra has committed himself to follow and document the changes in and around the town of Sochi (Abchazia) as it prepares for the Olympic Winter Games of 2014. Never before have these Games been held in a region which contrasts so strongly with the glamour of the Olympics. Rob Hornstra's documentary work leaves a haunting impression through its visual language of staged, yet unadorned portraits in combination with bleak landscapes and interiors, and straightforward descriptions. Rob Hornstra's work has previously been exhibited at the Noorderlicht photofestival, the GEM Museum of Contemporary Art, The Hague, the National Museum, Reykjavik, the Dutch photomuseum, Rotterdam, and in the travelling World Press Photo 2012 exposition. In 2013/2014, both Huis Marseille in Amsterdam and the Fotomuseum Antwerpen (FoMu) will host solo exhibitions of his work.
