Mari Bastashevski

The Netherlands, Amsterdam Unseen Gallery

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1980. Based between Switzerland and France. Her projects are set in regions where well-intentioned political mandates lead to corruption and abuses of power. The objective is to understand the ultra vires acts, as well as the use of information control mechanisms, and how said mechanisms facilitate the unaccountability of government officials. Between 2007-2010 she worked in Russia and North Caucasus on "File-126", a project about the abductions of civilians during the Russian counter-terrorism regime. This work has been published in XXI, NYTimes, Yvi and Esquire magazines and exhibited by the Open Society Foundation, Paris Photo, Slideluck Show, Grande Plage and Platform 2012 Fotomuseum Winterthur among others.

"State Business" is a project about the conflict arms trade industry. By means of select case studies it explores the link between conflict geographies, a handful of industry participants, and the hidden-in-plain-view environments in which they operate. The two chapters of this work presented at Unseen are looking at the connections between intermediaries, fliers, and state backed enterprises in Europe, Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East and Ukraine through a prism of select shipments of arms to both sides of one conflict.
