Femke Dekkers

The Netherlands, Amsterdam & Nijmegen Galerie Bart

In the tension between static architecture and the illusion of the scenic perspective, Femke Dekkers (NL, 1984) searches for free space, where sculpture and painting are merging. With the camera she determines a perspective and the three-dimensional environment is her canvas: an empty surface where new spatial arrangements can arise. Sometimes she tries to evaporate the physical space into lines, surfaces and patterns; sometimes she shows it as her working space with a roll of tape on the floor. In her new series Stages, Femke Dekkers refers to her working method. She photographs a number of stages that result from an on-going process of covering, over-painting and correcting. The outcome is a photo or a photo series that captures the moment when everything falls into place.

Femke Dekkers received her Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Academy St. Joost (‘s-Hertogenbosch). Her work has been on display at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum Het Valkhof (Nijmegen) and the Noordbrabants Museum (‘s-Hertogenbosch). She has participated in several artist in residence programs, such as the Vincent van Gogh Huis (Zundert) and ZIN (Vught).
