Alexander Mourant (GB, 1994) won the Free Range Graduate Award at the Truman Brewery graduate show in London in 2017. Raised on the Channel Island of Jersey, London-based artist Alexander Mourant is drawn to the friction between interior and exterior worlds, as well as photography’s power to represent existential ideas.
For his recent series Aomori, Mourant captured the blue depths of Japan’s ancestral forests with a lens filter developed specifically for this project. Aomori means "blue forest" in Japanese, and the project is a synthesis of two existential ideas: the forest, and the nature of blue. Presented together, the works create a special intensity, questioning the viewer's relationship with time, colour and self.
