DISCOVER THE WORK OF THE NOMINEES FOR THE MEIJBURG ART COMMISSION 2021 #NOMINEE Saskia Noor van Imhoff
NOMINEE MEIJBURG ART COMMISSION 2021 — Saskia Noor van Imhoff is known for her (site-specific) installations that express her fascination for systems and structures: the ways in which we catalog, archive and organise the world around us. She is often looking for the hidden histories within objects. For her latest work, she was inspired by a neglected piece of land that she bought just outside of Amsterdam. The earth and the plants that grow on it tell a history of both human and non-human interactions. Van Imhoff uses neon, photography, plexiglass and natural elements for a series of conceptual installations, supplemented with archival material like maps and historical documents that help her gain a better understanding of the plot of land. The grafting process, a technique in which a part of a plant is attached to a part of another plant, serves as a kind of metaphor for the progress of culture, but it also symbolises the manipulation of the landscape on a larger scale and the relationship between man and nature. In her work, the artist asks questions about ownership and stewardship.
The winner of the Meijburg Art Commission 2021 will be announced during Unseen, which will take place from 17-19 September in the @Westergas. With this prestigious prize, @KPMGnl Meijburg & Co. aims to offer photography talent the opportunity to develop new work and exhibit it to a wide audience. All photographers presenting their work during Unseen Photo Fair 2021 were invited to compete. Five nominees were selected by an international jury and the winner will receive a project fund for the creation of a work to be displayed in the Meijburg headquarters in Amstelveen. Afterwards, the work will be added to the Meijburg Art Collection. This year, a special Meijburg Lounge has been set up with the retrospective exhibition 'Five Years of the Meijburg Art Commission'. The 5 nominees for the Meijburg Art Commission 2021 are Thorsten Brinkmann (@HopstreetGallery), Thibault Brunet (@GalerieBinome), Popel Coumou (@TorchGallery), Saskia Noor van Imhoff (@GRIMMgallery) & Wanda Tuerlinckx (@ArtGalleryO68).
