The Empire Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, has a specific focus on contemporary art hailing from areas that once were part of the historical empires ruling most of the Mediterranean world and further. The gallery wishes to bring special attention to the fascinating photography and other forms of art from areas affected by the strong cultural influence of the empires.

At Unseen, the Empire Project will represent Sinem Disli (1982), Halil Koyutork (1957), Alp Sime (1970) and Ali Taptik (1983). Ali Taptik, an architect by training and a self-taught photographer, was recently selected as one of the 16 Foam Talents for 2012 (Foam Magazine #32). In a recent interview with Unseen, Taptik revealed that he truly is a story-teller with his photography. For him, "taking pictures is like collecting words". Images are rearranged by the artist into stories that are much like the ones writers of fiction create. Despite his childhood-dream of becoming a writer, Taptik found photography to be a more suitable tool for expressing himself. He wishes that his photographs will become something like a brilliant novel - something, that the viewer wants to interact with again and again.

The Empire Project shall begin its season at Unseen 2012. After the fair on October 4th, an exhibition by Athier Mousawi will take place at the gallery. If you happen to be in Istanbul then, do not forget to visit the Empire Project at Sıraselviler Caddesi No:10. The opening hours of the gallery are on Monday from 12am - 7:30pm, and Tuesday to Saturday from 11am - 7:30pm.
