Darius Himes, Assistant Director of Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco and co-founder of Radius Books, spoke to our gallery contact, Sasha Stone. Here is what he had to say about collecting photography, more specifically photography books, and the Unseen Photo Fair…

Himes was founding editor of photo-eye Booklist, a quarterly magazine devoted to photography books, which ran from 2002–2007. He is a co-founder of Radius Books, a non-profit publisher of books on photography and the visual arts, where he serves on the Board and consults on project acquisitions. In addition, he is a lecturer, educator and writer, and a member of the jury of the Foam Paul Huff Award, an annual prize given to a photography talent under 35 years old and consists of €20,000 and an exhibition at Foam (the 2012 Paul Huff Award winner was American photographer Alex Prager).

His most recent title, Publish Your Photography Book, co-authored with Mary Virginia Swanson, was released by Princeton Architectural Press in the Spring of 2011. In this book, the authors "demystify the process of producing and publishing a book of photographs." Watch the New York Public Library lecture on publishing from December 2010 with Himes and co-author Swanson.
