Carolien Scholtes

The Netherlands, Amsterdam Galerie Caroline O’Breen

Carolien Scholtes (NL, 1958) studied painting and scenography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksacademie in the Netherlands. Until 2008 she worked as a scenographer, filmmaker and promoter of multi-disciplinary projects.

Scholtes turned photographer in 2008. She builds setups in her studio, which she photographs or films, before destroying them again. In a unique way, her work both touches upon and escapes feelings of grief, loss and time. A change in tone that has everything to do with the brain damage she sustained in 2008, turning her world upside down and marking a caesura in life and work.
In this photo series, Judas and the Others, Scholtes creates a connection with mystical movements such as early Christianity. Her work shows also a slight resemblance with the collages by Schwitters and his Merzbau.
