In this feature we give you an insight into what we have been up to in London over the past few days, in the lead up to Photo London, opening today. Catch the Unseen team in London on Instagram as we look out for even more Unseen Talent.
On Tuesday evening we visited the ING UK Office in London, Unseen’s main partner for an event organised between Unseen and ING. The work of the finalists from the ING Unseen Talent Award 2016 was exhibited, including last year’s winner and special guest, Thomas Albdorf (1982, AU). He showed his new work and book, General View. The work is an on-going project, investigating the status of the photographic image focusing on the need to document overly recorded scenic destinations, and the duplication of these images through the Internet.
The ING Unseen Talent award provides an international platform for emerging European photography talent to present their work on a global scale. Other artists and ING Unseen Talent Award 2016 finalists exhibiting at the event were; Felicity Hammond (1988, UK), Tereza Zelenkova (1985, CZ), Miren Pastor (1985, ES) and Laurianne Bixhain (1987, LU). Over champagne and canapés, guests conversed about the fantastic and thought provoking work on display and got a chance to mingle with the artists about their experience with the ING Unseen Talent Award.
Alongside the exhibition, we also held a panel discussion chaired by Unseen’s Artistic Director, Emilia van Lynden on ‘Building Your Collection’ offering different perspectives from experts in the contemporary photography-collecting world. The panel spoke about their experiences of collecting and shared their knowledge on how to develop a collection. Delving into the emotional connection one has when selecting work as well as the research involved to make the purchase worthwhile. Speakers included were; Dominic Bell (Webber Gallery Space), Nicola von Roenne (Private Collector and Art Advisor) and Sanne ten Brink (Head Curator, ING Collection).
ING and Unseen continue to work together and we’re excited to see what great work will emerge from the ING Unseen Talent Award 2017. We will announce the finalists of the ING Unseen Talent Award 2017 in June.
