Together Grolsch and Unseen have created the Grolsch Unseen Residency: a scholarship given annually to one artist to create a new body of work within the local urban creative landscape of that year’s chosen European city. The chosen artist will be urged to look at the urban space in alternative and uncommon ways. The resulting work from the residency will be launched at the following edition of Unseen Amsterdam.
The winner of the first edition of the Grolsch Unseen Residency was Lana Mesić (1987, Croatia), selected during Unseen Amsterdam 2016 out of 61 premiering artists by an international jury consisting of Alison Nordstrom (curator, US), Jenny Nordquist (Artistic Director, Landskrona Foto Festival, SE) and Karin Andreasson (Photo Editor, The Guardian, SE). Lana Mesić has finished a two-month residency in London, where she worked closely with photography professionals including Simon Bainbridge (Editor in Chief, British Journal of Photography) and Olivier Richon (Head of Photography Programme, Royal College of Arts), as well as with leaders of the local creative industry. Her new body of work will be unveiled during Unseen Amsterdam 2017.
2016 INTERNATIONAL JURY
This year the international jury consists of of Alison Nordstrom (curator, US), Jenny Nordquist (Artistic Director, Landskrona Foto Festival, SE) and Karin Andreasson (Photo Editor, The Guardian, SE). From 61 premiering artists presented, the jury will choose the final winner for the Grolsch Unseen Residency, to be announced mid November 2016.
Sharing the perspective that conventions must be challenged to create something new, Grolsch and Unseen have formed a partnership to encourage emerging artists to look at the urban environment with fresh eyes. The residency offers the artist a platform where they get the chance to excel and gain exposure within the international art world, when their work is presented at Unseen Amsterdam 2017.
