From 16 to 25 September Unseen presents the exhibition TOUCHED – Craftsmanship in Contemporary Photography, curated by internationally renowned Dutch photographer and film director Anton Corbijn. The exhibition shows the work of twelve international photographers to provide an exclusive insight in the way contemporary artists employ artisanal photographic processes or use photographic prints to create unique objects. In contemporary photography, one sees a growing tendency for craftsmanship and unity as a response to the present-day digitalization and mass production of images. TOUCHED reflects on this important development and brings together exclusive work by mostly young artists who are increasingly making a name for themselves. Simultaneously, the exhibition demonstrates the richness and variety of contemporary photography. TOUCHED – Craftsmanship in Contemporary Photography is part of the Unseen Photo Festival and will be on display in Museum Het Schip in the Spaarndammerbuurt.
Authenticity, uniqueness, and craftsmanship are values that have come to stand under increasing scrutiny in the age of digitally generated or manipulated images. As a countermovement, more and more artists have returned to the darkroom and are experimenting with old photographic techniques, employing them in new ways to create highly contemporary images. Photographic prints are also increasingly used to create multimedia objects. TOUCHED brings together works by various artists wherein this attention to the process and the physical qualities are paramount, where the hand of the creator is clearly recognizable.
The Dutch photographer, film director and graphic designer Anton Corbijn has always had a great interest in the working process of (visual) artists and recognizes the importance of authenticity, uniqueness and craftsmanship – in his own work, but also in that of artists he appreciates or admires. The process – the actual creation of physical work – plays an important role in this. For this reason, Unseen has invited Anton Corbijn to be the guest curator of an exhibition that focuses specifically on the role of craftsmanship in contemporary photography. Corbijn focuses on both the work of established photographers who have been in the industry for some time, as well as on that of a relatively young generation of artists.
TOUCHED will present the work of Dirk Braeckman, Antony Cairns, Gerard Fieret, Adam Jeppesen, Paul Kooiker, Susanna Kraus, Thomas Mailaender, Nerhol, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Miroslav Tichý and Daisuke Yokota.
